New Coalition Aims to Promote and Sustain Reliable, Affordable Postal Package Delivery Services for American Consumers

Amazon, Columbia Sportswear, Express Scripts, National Retail Federation, OSM Worldwide, Pitney Bowes, Publishers Clearing House & QVC form The Package Coalition

Washington, D.C. - A diverse group of America’s leading retailers, e-commerce and logistics companies announced that they have come together to form The Package Coalition.

The goal of The Package Coalition is to work proactively with policymakers and the public to highlight the importance of the postal package delivery services to American businesses and consumers. The Postal Service’s package delivery business more than covers its costs; last year it contributed an additional $7 billion to the Postal Service’s bottom line.

“Reliable and affordable postal package delivery is a key engine of the American economy,” said John McHugh, chairman of The Package Coalition. “We support policy solutions to preserve this channel of commerce for all Americans, especially those in remote and rural areas that do not have consistently affordable alternatives to the Postal Service. Members of The Package Coalition partner with the US Postal Service to deliver their goods over the last mile to more than 150 million American homes and businesses.”

The US Postal Service (USPS) is the only daily delivery service that connects every one of America’s 157 million addresses. Specifically, the Postal Service’s package delivery business is a success story for the economy, jobs, and the postal system. That piece of the business is growing, profitable, and is necessary to help fund the Postal Service’ universal delivery obligation.

The Coalition’s members represent millions of small, medium and large businesses that have harnessed the power of retail and the ability to sell online to further create jobs and contribute to the economic health of communities nationwide. Coalition membership includes some of the country’s most-loved brands, including: Amazon, Columbia Sportswear, Express Scripts, National Retail Federation, OSM Worldwide, Pitney Bowes, Publishers Clearing House and QVC.

“A growing number of Americans, especially seniors and veterans, rely on the Postal Service to deliver critical items like prescription drugs,” said Gary Kline, Vice President of government affairs at Express Scripts. “The ability to affordably, reliably and conveniently receive medicine directly at their doorstep is essential for elderly and rural Americans.”

"Package delivery via the US Postal Service is a win-win for customers, businesses and the USPS," said James Chin, head of government affairs for QVC, Inc, the number one video and number three US e-commerce and mobile commerce company. “We see USPS as a trusted and integral partner for millions of American businesses like ours in helping to deliver a robust and engaging shopping experience to our fans and customers."

“The USPS delivers packages to every home in America, provides seven day a week service, and connects millions of small businesses with customers across the globe – without it, consumers would have fewer shipping options, reduced service in rural areas, and prices would drastically increase,” said Blair Anderson, Director of transportation policy at Amazon

John M. McHugh, former Secretary of the Army and Member of Congress, will serve as the Coalition’s Chairman. During his tenure in the U.S. House of Representatives, McHugh served as Chairman of the Subcommittee on the Postal Service where he spearheaded legislation that significantly reformed the USPS. McHugh also represented the most rural Congressional district east of the Mississippi River.
